Lose 5 kilograms in 5 days, cleanse your body of toxins, get red carpet ready without exercising, the claims go on and on but is there any proof that following a detox diet has any weight loss or health benefits?
Is there any evidence that detoxes remove toxins or improve the health of an individual?
Scientists from the sense about science organization found no evidence that commercial detoxes have any health benefits and in fact stated that they view detoxes as a “waste of money” and totally unnecessary.
This view is echoed by many doctors and scientists however, some doctors believe a liver cleansing diet that emphasizes drinking 8-12 glasses of water per day, avoiding dairy, increasing the amount of veggies, fruits, nuts and healthy fats you consume and eating only poultry and fish for protein could have liver cleansing and heath promoting benefits.
Are there any side effects associated with liquid detoxes?
There can be side effects whn following a liquid detox with the most common side effects being fatigue, nausea headaches, bloating, cramping, flatulence and diarrhea.
It’s true that if you go on a liquid detox you will lose “weight” and most likely some body fat with it.
However there are a few things you should know before you run out and buy the latest detox.
First weight loss is a simple game of numbers.
If your body requires 2000 calories per day to function and you only eat 1500 calories you body will get the other 500 calories it needs from your body fat stores.
Do this on a recurring basis and you will lose body fat and body weight.
Liquid detox diets cause you to lose weight because they are very low in calories requiring your body to use its body fat stores for energy to make up the difference in energy. The problem with these diets is that they are usually very low in protein. If your body is lacking protein it will start to cannibalize your muscle mass.
You lose muscle mass for three reasons while on a liquid diet.
The first reason you lose muscle mass is because the human body prefers to use muscle for energy over body fat when a low calorie, low protein diet is introduced.
Second your body gets the protein it needs to function by breaking down and metabolizing your existing muscle mass.
Third your body cannibalizes it’s muscle to reduce the number of calories / energy it needs.
Your body is trying to basically change from being a fuel hungry sports car to a fuel-efficient hybrid to ensure you don’t run out of body fat because body fat is essential to life.
Detoxing & Instant Weight Loss
You lose weight quickly on a liquid detox diet because your not eating any solids. By not eating solids you flush all the digestive matter in your intestinal tract and bowel out, which makes you weigh less on the scales, until you start eating again!
Keeping the Weight Off After a Detox
Reducing your muscle mass has implications later down the road when it comes to keeping the weight off long term.
When you reduce your muscle mass you no longer burn as many calories making it easier to gain weight and what makes it worse is that building your muscle mass back up is a very slow process.
To Detox or Not to Detox?
In my opinion there is no need to follow a liquid detox to rid the body of toxins, improve health or to lose weight
I do believe if your somebody who eats large amounts of junk food, smokes, drinks large amounts of coffee, soft drinks or excessive amounts of alcohol switching to a high fibre, nutrient rich diet that consists of mainly veggies, fruits, nuts, lean meats and healthy fats combined with plenty of water, sleep and exercise will help to rid the body of toxins and will improve your health and body fat levels
The human body is extremely efficient at ridding it’s self of toxins on it’s own it has an entire system for this (liver, kidneys, lungs, skin) all we need to do is eat healthy foods, drink plenty of water, get enough sleep, move and enjoy life!
